The Salk Institute. La Jolla, CA. 2010.
One of my favorite documentaries is 'My Architect,' a film about Salk Institute designer Louis Kahn, made by Kahn's son Nathaniel.
You should see that movie, and you should visit the Salk.
It's a weird and almost spiritual place. But at the same time a working lab filled with people going about their daily business.
The trickle of water that splits this main courtyard creates a line that leads the eye straight to the vast expanse of the Pacific.
Kahn's building's have an elemental, timeless quality. The Salk seems ancient, almost natural, yet it functions as a working laboratory.
